Reliant Roofing Systems, Inc. was incorporated January 1st 1990 by Richard and Lesley Smith.

Richie arrived in Fort Lauderdale with a Roofing background in Liverpool England. In fact the Reliant Roofing logo is a rough outline of the Liverpool Skyline from across the river Mersey.

Here in America, Richie started in the business as a Tile Setter in 1984 working his way up to full Roofing Mechanic. With good solid knowledge of both Commercial Roofing and Residential Roofing, Richie studied and passed his Florida State Roofing Contractors exam in 1989.

Soon after, with new wife Lesley and a strong Entrepreneurial spirit, Richie opened Reliant Roofing Systems, Inc. Today after nearly 18 years, Richard Smith is the qualifier of record on completed roofing permits throughout Florida.

Hurricane Andrew was the most devastating storm to hit S. Florida in over 25 years. During that time period S. Florida grew at an enormous rate. Unfortunately, many building codes were not kept up to date especially the roofing codes. Hurricane Andrew today is thought to be the most influential event to affect the building industry. The codes that were changed after Hurricane Andrew have helped make S. Florida a safer place to live.

Hurricane Andrew also affected Reliant Roofing Systems, Inc. in a big way. Business was easily found but it was Richie’s reputation that put Reliant Roofing Systems, Inc. on the map. Working closely with prominent insurance restoration companies, Reliant was the roofer on record for numerous residential and commercial roofs damaged by Hurricane Andrew. This is also when Richie’s wife Lesley became more involved in growing the business. Lesley’s knowledge of small business is keen, having been Vice President of a previous successful family business. She knew that to grow you must invest back into your business. This was the perfect time to purchase the equipment that allowed Reliant Roofing Systems to become a prominent roofing contractor in S. Florida.

Reliant Roofing Systems was also looking to make the investment in good people. Soon after hurricane Andrew, Steve Sharp joined the business. With a solid background in the construction arena back in England, Steve brought a quality that is evident today at Reliant Roofing Systems: Attention to Detail. Many of the business systems that are in place at Reliant are the result of Steve’s ability to see both the small and big pictures. The relationship Steve has with numerous General Contractors in Florida has helped Reliant grow into one of the most reputable Roofing Contractors in the business today. As a Senior Project Manager, Steve has personally quoted, sold, supervised and completed hundreds of roofs in the state of Florida.

Jump to 2005 when Reliant Roofing Systems welcomed Tom Clark, Lesley’s brother. Having just sold a software company, Tom originally came on to help bring the company in the front office. But soon after arriving and 2 hurricanes (Katrina & Wilma) later, Tom headed out in the field to try and keep up with all the demands. Today, Tom is a Project Manager cultivating his own clientele. As a life long resident of Broward County, Tom is finding this demanding business both fun and rewarding. Getting out from behind a desk was a new beginning for Tom and he looks forward to helping people with all their roofing needs.
